Why Can't This Be Love Lyrics

“Why Can’t This Be Love” is a yearning plea for a genuine connection amidst confusion and uncertainty. The narrator is swept away by an intense, unfamiliar feeling – “that funny feelin again” – with this captivating person, desperately hoping it signifies true love. He acknowledges the potential pitfalls of romance, referencing the cliché "only fools rush in," yet his desire to believe overrides any caution. Van Halen’s message centers on a raw, almost desperate longing for something profound and transformative, questioning why a simple, powerful attraction can't blossom into lasting love. The repeated refrain, “Why can’t this be love?”, embodies the frustration of wanting a fairytale romance while simultaneously recognizing the risks involved, ultimately expressing a hopeful yet vulnerable wish for a connection that transcends mere infatuation.
