The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get Lyrics

The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get is a darkly obsessive lament from Morrissey about unrequited love and the frustrating persistence of a heartbroken soul. The repeated refrain – “the more you ignore me, the closer I get” – embodies his escalating desperation and the twisted logic of someone consumed by longing. He’s not seeking affection; instead, he thrives on being noticed, even if it's through irritation and rejection, becoming an unwelcome fixture in the subject’s thoughts like a persistent debt. Fueled by simmering resentment ("more grudges than lonely high court judges"), he threatens psychological warfare, declaring “it’s war.” The desperate pleas to "let me in" reveal a yearning for connection intertwined with a desire to inflict pain. Ultimately, Morrissey portrays himself as an inescapable shadow, demonstrating how ignoring someone can paradoxically draw them closer through the sheer force of his unwavering, and unsettling, devotion.
