I Heard a Rumour Lyrics

“I Heard a Rumour” captures the agonizing aftermath of a romantic betrayal, exploring themes of regret, fear, and the difficulty of forgiveness. The narrator recounts discovering a damaging rumour about their partner – a broken heart – and grapples with the realization that they were completely oblivious to the true nature of the relationship. The song’s core emotion is heartbreak mixed with cautious apprehension; the “rumour” has shattered trust, leading to a paralyzing fear of vulnerability and a reluctance to offer a second chance. Despite hearing about a supposed change in behavior, the narrator admits being "too afraid" to embrace reconciliation, recognizing that the damage is irreparable. Bananarama’s upbeat production ironically underscores the painful truth – sometimes, even with information, the wounds are too deep to heal, and moving on becomes the only logical, albeit heartbreaking, choice.
