Hero Lyrics
I am so high,
I can hear heaven
I am so high,
I can hear heaven
Whoa, but heaven
no, heaven
don't hear me
And they say
That a hero could save us
I'm not gonna stand here and wait
I'll hold onto the wings of the eagles
Watch as we all fly away
Someone told me
Love would all save us
But, how can that be
Look what love gave us
A world full of killing
And blood spilling
That world never came
And they say
That a hero could save us
I'm not gonna stand here and wait
I'll hold onto the wings of the eagles
Watch as we all fly away
now that that the world
isn't ending
it's now that I'm sending to you
isn't the love of a hero
and that's why I fear it won't do
And they say
That a hero could save us
I'm not gonna stand here and wait
I'll hold onto the wings of the eagles
Watch as we all fly away
And they're watching us
Watching us
They're watching us
Watching us
As we all fly away
And they're watching us
Watching us
They're watching us
Watching us
As we all fly away
And they're watching us
Watching us
They're watching us
Watching us
As we all fly away
whoa
Meaning of Hero
“Hero” explores a profound disillusionment with the idea of traditional heroism and savior figures. The lyrics depict a feeling of being overwhelmed, soaring to a point of clarity (“I can hear heaven”) only to be confronted by the harsh realities – violence, destruction, and broken promises – associated with attempts to save humanity through love or idealized heroes. Chad Kroeger’s vocals convey frustration and a weary skepticism, rejecting passive waiting while simultaneously acknowledging the yearning for salvation. The repeated imagery of “wings of the eagles” suggests a desire for escape and transcendence, a flight away from a world marred by conflict. Ultimately, the song isn't about celebrating a hero but rather expressing fear that such figures are ineffective, highlighting a loss of faith in grand solutions and a desperate need to move beyond them – watching as everyone “fly away.”
