Everybody Wants to Rule the World Lyrics

“Everybody Wants to Rule the World” explores a profound sense of disillusionment and anxiety about humanity’s relentless pursuit of power and control. The lyrics depict a world obsessed with shaping its own destiny, often disregarding natural order and genuine connection, symbolized by “turning your back on mother nature.” There's a desperate yearning for freedom and pleasure, yet an underlying awareness that nothing truly lasts – “nothing ever lasts forever” – fueling a cycle of regret and indecision. The repeated refrain, "Everybody wants to rule the world," acts as a critical observation of our collective ambition, coupled with a feeling of being trapped by this desire. Tears for Fears convey a melancholic tone, suggesting a sadness at witnessing this futile struggle and a recognition that even attempts at building something beautiful will inevitably fade, leaving behind only remnants and unanswered questions.
