Absolute Beginners Lyrics

“Absolute Beginners” captures the exhilarating and slightly terrifying feeling of falling deeply into a new relationship, acknowledging its inherent vulnerability. The speaker presents themselves as an “absolute beginner,” admitting they have little to offer yet desperately wanting connection, stating “I absolutely love you.” Despite nervousness and recognizing potential challenges – symbolized by needing a “love song” that can overcome obstacles like mountains and heartache – there’s a hopeful optimism fueled by the desire for a cinematic, uncomplicated romance. Bowie emphasizes embracing the unknown with "eyes completely open," suggesting awareness without fear. The core message is one of joyful acceptance and trust; if their love can soar as freely as in the movies, then difficult moments are surmountable, and nothing truly stands in the way of a fulfilling connection, ultimately stating “nothing much could happen” as long as they share a smile.
