A Design for Life Lyrics

Libraries gave us power, a sense of purpose forged in knowledge – then work stripped that away, offering only the illusion of freedom. The repeated refrain, “A design for life,” reveals a bleak and pre-determined existence, dictated by forces beyond individual control; a future where shallow dignity is bought at a terrible price. The lyrics depict a society consumed by escapism through alcohol, avoiding genuine connection and emotional vulnerability. "We don't talk about love we only want to get drunk," reflects a profound disengagement with the human experience. The desperate desire for a “bottle right here in my dirty face” symbolizes a yearning to bear visible scars of struggle, a rejection of enforced conformity, but ultimately, it’s a futile attempt to define one’s own life within this imposed ‘design’. The Manic Street Preachers powerfully convey a sense of alienation and despair, questioning the very structure of modern existence.
