Stormzy, born Michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr. on July 26, 1993, in Croydon, South London, is a British rapper, singer, and songwriter who has become one of the most influential figures in the UK music scene. Raised in a Ghanaian family, Stormzy's musical journey began during his teenage years when he started freestyling and uploading videos to YouTube. His breakthrough came in 2014 with the release of the freestyle 'Shut Up,' which went viral and peaked at number eight on the UK Singles Chart. This success led to his signing with the independent label Merky Records, co-founded by Stormzy himself. His debut album, 'Gang Signs & Prayer,' released in 2017, was a monumental success, becoming the first grime album to win the prestigious Mercury Prize and earning him critical acclaim. The album featured hits like 'Big for Your Boots' and 'Blinded by Your Grace, Pt. 2,' showcasing his versatility and depth as an artist.
